JSTOR and University of California Press Announce Current Scholarship Program
We are happy to announce a new effort that will enable invited publishers working with JSTOR to make their current issues, along with their back issues, available on the JSTOR platform. This effort is being launched initially by University of California Press and JSTOR, and additional publishers are being invited to join. Beginning in 2011, current content from all University of California Press published journals will be hosted on a redesigned JSTOR platform. Current issues, back issues, and a growing set of primary source materials from libraries will all be accessible from the same platform. JSTOR's nearly 6,000 library participants worldwide will be able to license the Press's current journals, either individually or as part of current issue collections, together with JSTOR back issue collections in a single transaction.
We are very excited about this new initiative. Over the years, we have had many requests from presses and journals to offer this service, in addition to calls from libraries to help streamline licensing of dispersed journals and suggestions from users to provide access to current issues on JSTOR. This collaborative effort will bring current scholarship online in an environment that balances the core interests of publishers, libraries, and users. While the initial focus is journals, we recognize the need for similar solutions for other types of content such as monographs, and will be considering other approaches in the future.
Supporting the academic community in this way is highly consistent with our mission. Our focus is on helping the academic community take advantage of advances in information technologies, not only to preserve the scholarly record, but also to broaden access to scholarship and to advance research and teaching in ways that are sustainable. We believe that we can support this new program and make an important contribution to the scholarly community alongside our current efforts to preserve and make back issues of journals and other scholarly materials accessible.
